Safer Futures Fund
Friday 28th Aug Building safer, more humane justice and mental health systems — through the people who lead them.Safer communities start with people who understand why harm happens — and how to prevent it.
The Safer Futures Fund is an initiative of Swinburne's Centre for Forensic Behavioural Science (CFBS), Australasia's leading centre for research, teaching and practice in forensic mental health and behavioural science. Bringing together experts across psychology, psychiatry, nursing, social work, law, occupational therapy and epidemiology, CFBS generates new knowledge and translates it into practice that makes communities safer. Its partnerships run deep: with Forensicare, and with Victoria Police, where CFBS developed an Australian-first risk-assessment approach to help police identify the family violence cases where severe harm is most likely.
CFBS graduates go on to lead across government, clinical practice, academia and the community. Your gift to the Safer Futures Fund helps equip the next generation of forensic behavioural science professionals — fostering innovation, inclusivity and research excellence — so we can build justice and mental health systems that are effective, humane and grounded in cutting-edge science.

The Safer Futures Fund supports research and practice excellence through four priorities:
Research Impact Scholarships — help final-year Doctor of Psychology (Clinical & Forensic) students facing financial hardship publish their work so it has the greatest possible influence on the field. These are supported by an endowment, so gifts here build a lasting legacy that funds more scholarships over time.
Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Scholarships — support outstanding doctoral candidates whose research drives innovation, influences policy, and improves justice and mental health systems in Australia and beyond.
Professional Excellence Scholarships — open the field to talented postgraduate students from culturally diverse backgrounds and non-traditional pathways, building a more representative and effective workforce.
Intervention Innovation Gifts — fund the development and evaluation of interventions that prevent harmful behaviour and improve community safety, across areas like family violence, youth violence, and violence in mental health settings.
You can also choose to fund a named prize, recognising a student whose work helps build safer, more humane communities.
